Recent Press

Recently I’ve been involved in a lot of exciting projects which I’m pleased to share with you.  The year is drawing to an end, and I’m so privileged to have worked among the industry’s finest!!

You might remember my post on Jasmine Star’s Workshop a while ago.  It has since been published in the December/January issue of  Wedding Magazine, one of the biggest publications in the wedding industry.

Dashing Magazine is a brand new online magazine designed for the ‘stylish and spirited girl’, and is the brainchild of Fanni, Josie and Charley.  I was asked to do a sixties-inpired photoshoot with the Wonderwoman Emma Case, check out the story here (our shoot is on page 70 – 77)  Be sure to subscribe to the magazine, it’s full of beautiful content, and has such a fresh design, perfect for lunchtime reads!!!

See Hear, a program by the BBC focusing on the deaf community, did a feature on the amazing photographer, Ashton Jean-Pierre’s work.  Kat from Rock ‘n Roll Bride asked me to do her (and husband Gareth’s!) hair and make-up, as they were the models for the shoot.  Ashton mainly shoots in film, I simply love the raw quality of his work!   You could check out the full shoot here, and the program on BBC iPlayer here.

The Ultimate Love-In

You know when life gets a bit overwhelming, and then suddenly you get that feeling that ‘everything’s going to be alright’?  See this as my most recent epiphany.

I am so blessed to be surrounded by like-minded mega-talented people.  Case in point:  the Feather Love workshop hosted by Noa Azoulay-Sclater, the beautifully-minded artist/photographer behind Feather Love.  With the help of Rock n Roll Bride and darling ‘I-hug-everyone-at-hello’ Emma Case who was a guest speaker, talking about her own journey and inspiration, this was a match made in wedding HEAVEN!!!  Oh, and it didn’t hurt that we had an amazing couple to shoot (Kat’s new intern, Roo, and her fiancé Lamb) and that it was held HERE

So I was responsible for the hair and make-up on the lovely Roo (who’s got amazing taste, I might add) and we also got to play a bit with Paperself Eyelashes  and shimmery gleamy bronzy eyeshadows. The idea was cult 70’s, I know Noa had a better ‘spirited’ description, and for the life of my I can’t remember it!  There were loads of taxidermy, fur, wild flowers… (again, my idea of heaven!) all supplied by the smart lady Amy of Little ‘a’.  Roo got to wear a dreamy vintage gown by Charlotte Casadejus (see more of her wedding dress shopping trip HERE).

A seriously felt so much at home, and everything Noa and Emma said resonated well with where I am at this very moment with my creative life, and how I should take it to the next level.  This included stopping and appreciating little things around you, and letting them inspire you.  ‘Inspired by’ should not be  ‘copying’, and learning how to use something subtle that has spoken to you, and be guided by that, the core, instead of doing the obvious.

Before I blabber on too much, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone involved, it was great to see old friends, and also to meet new ones.

Oh, and I’ll never look at hip hop in the same way.

Jasmine Star Workshop – A Make-up Artist’s Review

So a couple of months ago Kat from Rock ‘n Roll Bride asked me if I would like to get involved in doing the make-up for a workshop. Not just any workshop, this would be supernova wedding photographer, Jasmine Star‘s first UK workshop.. Needless to say, I jumped at the chance!

Jasmine is a hugely successful photographer based in the States, and her workshop was an inspiration to everyone who attended, whether you’re a photographer or not. I think that’s mostly because the core of it is to identify what makes your brand, YOUR brand. To isolate what sets you apart, and to use it to your advantage.

The little bits that I manage to hear in between doing the make-up were brilliant, I had so many eureka moments on the day!

Thanks again for Jasmine and her husband, JD, for inspiring us, and Kat for organising it all!

Some of the photographers who attended the course wrote reports, check it out HERE

Oooh! And make sure you watch the fabulous video made by FX Films (and yes, he makes everyone look gooood)

(outtake from the Rock ‘n Riot shoot, with the Rock ‘n Roll Bride herself!) Photographer:  Emma Case

Ok, I know it’s been AGES since my last blog entry, but I guess life happened.  And we struggled with web access for over a month! (But that’s another long story…)

Ooh! But I finally quit my job, so I’m now Elbie van Eeden – FULL-TIME FREELANCER.  It kinda has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

Exciting week ahead!!  Tonight I’ll be meeting up for drinks with Kat from Rock ‘n Roll Bride, wedding photographer extraordinaire Jasmine Star, all of the photographers attending and the rest of the ‘behind the scenes crew’ taking part in tomorrow’s (!!!) workshop, which I blogged about here.  I can’t believe that this day has come around so fast!! I’m very excited to be a part of this, doing the make-up for tomorrow’s shoot, and working with so many talented and inspiring individuals.

I will keep you updated with the ongoings via twitter, and might even sneak a couple of pictures in!

And in future, I’ll try my utmost best to be a better blogger… PROMISE!

What I’ve been up to recently, and a request…

So it’s been a while since my last post (sorry!) but I just thought that rather than posting something that has been said before in other beauty blogs, I had to work on what people actually WANT to see.  (Feel free to rant, babble, spill your dreams in the comments!)

Ok, so there are BIG THINGS happening in the near future, all will be revealed soon!  In the meantime, why don’t you check out the sneak preview of the Rock n Riot shoot I did with Rock ‘n Roll Bride?  A full list of suppliers and more about the day of awesomeness will be released soon, but here is a iPhone pic I took:

In similarly exciting news, I’ve been asked to do the make-up for Jasmine Star‘s UK workshop in July!!!  For those of you who don’t know, this amazing photographer has taken the world by storm with her workshops on branding, and for the first time, she will be in London for an inspiring day, sharing her experiences and helping other photographers improve their brands.

This has been published in the July issue of Photo Pro Magazine.

Some of the people who will be involved:

Kat from Rock ‘n Roll Bride, who organised the event,

Wedding Magazine, who will be styling the photoshoot, as well as featuring it in an upcoming issue,

Severin of the Hepburn Collection,

One Marylebone,

Pollen Nation,

The Recipe,

Great Hire

I’m so excited to be a part of this amazing project, and can’t wait to share my experience!

Ok, so here’s what I need from you…

I have already asked on twitter earlier what people would like to read on a wedding hair and make-up blog (things that haven’t been repeated over and over again!) Now is your chance to help build the blog into something useful for future brides… so…. GO!!!

Our own wedding featured on Rock n Roll Bride!!

I was beyond excited when Kat, creator of www.rocknrollbride.com asked if she could feature our wedding on her site.  My story with Kat is a precious one, and I’m eternally grateful for what she has done for my business.  It was mainly because of her that I started to focus more on weddings in the first place!  And also, because of her, I have had the most awesome brides (don’t ya think?)

I started to follow Rock n Roll Bride shortly after my own engagement about two years ago.  (I think I’ve literally Googled ‘alternative wedding ideas’ or something along those lines!)  I started to follow her on twitter, soaking up on all the pink-haired goodness, and she started following me too, after featuring some of the Wonderland project that I’ve been working on with Kirsty Mitchell. (Click here, here, and here to see the posts.)  We started talking, organised a shoot, and BAM!  An instant friendship was born.

So in short, it’s been quite a journey, and I’m privileged to have our wedding blogged on her fabulous site.  (Oh, and it IS relevant, as I’ve done my own hair and make-up!)

Anna + Bean, Northumberland

Another ‘twitter bride’, Anna invited me over to have a chat about a collaboration for her blog.  That conversation quickly shifted when we started comparing notes about both of our upcoming nuptials, and saw that there were going to be many similarities!  Needless to say, the blog interview has been put aside when we realised there were more important things to discuss.

Their wedding has been a challenge to get to because of heavy, heavy snow but I managed to get there in one piece!  Anna and Bean invited me to stay for the wedding itself (after all, it would’ve been dangerous to leave at that stage!) and I felt incredibly lucky to have shared their very special authentic, eclectic day.  This lady has gotten impeccable taste (just check out her blog posts) and she’s an Agony Aunt on Rock n Roll Bride,  so I knew that this was going to be one classy affair!

As a girl who never wears much make-up, we ended up with a fresh-looking, radiant, pretty look, with nothing too fussy about it.  Her hair was put up in glamorous big pincurls to go with that fantastic dress. I’ve done the bridesmaids’ hair in loose relaxed curls and upstyles, according to their preferences. Later on I added the most amazing lashes from Paperself on Anna for drama.

Elisa and Dan – Groucho Club, Soho

And yes, her hair was in a BOW.

Elisa got married in October 2011, and saw my work on Rock n Roll Bride. I literally clapped my hands when she told me about their wedding details, and obviously because she wanted to have her hair done in a bow(!!!)  Their whole wedding was themed around bows and lollipops (check out her bouquet!) and the results were amazing. They had an incredible amount of detail in their wedding, from the grooms’s lollipop buttonhole, to her shoes with lollipops and bows, but it ended up being incredibly well put together, without any unnecessary clutter.

Abbie + Steven – Brownsover Hall, Rugby

Abbie started following me on twitter, and after a few DM’s about her hair and make-up, she decided to see me for a trial.

In her own words:  ‘It’s a winter wedding and if I had to give it a style it’s ‘tumbledown fairytale’. I think I just made that up, but I guess I want things to look overgrown and out of control but with a bit of sparkle.’  And sparkled, it did!

What I loved about her wedding is that she has stuck with her ideas, with BIG dress, BIG hair and BLUE nails.  They had the wedding THEY had wanted, and with all their ideas put together (trying not to sound like the Captain Planet intro, honest!) they ended up having an honest, leopard-print-wearing,  butt-kicking wedding.
